Survivorship Coordinators Help Patients Thrive
September 23, 2020
When it comes to cancer care, there is no substitute for experience. The MercyOne Des Moines Cancer Center staff are there supporting patients as they go through their cancer journey.
Funds raised through last year’s Annual Campaign were used to support the Survivorship Coordinator program at the Cancer Center. The Survivorship Coordinator develops cancer care plans and serves as a resource to patients and families following treatment.
“A lot of times when patients finish their treatment they are unsure of what to do next,” said Peggy Reed, Survivorship Coordinator at MercyOne Des Moines Cancer Center. “I am there to give them the support and knowledge they need.”
The cancer journey doesn’t stop at the end of treatment. Peggy explained that survivorship is a very important part of their journey. Through the Survivorship Coordinator, cancer patients receive valuable information about cancer support services and resources that can improve a cancer survivors’ long-term well-being.
“The healing effects or the relationships that patients make with their doctors and nurses is tremendous,” said Dr. Richard Deming, Director of MercyOne Des Moines Cancer Center.
“This program has a real positive impact on patients we serve,” said Peggy.
