Clive, Iowa; Sept. 22, 2023 – MercyOne Chief Medical Executive, Hijinio Carreon, DO, is one of 130 chief medical officers of hospitals and health systems to know in 2023, as selected by Becker’s Hospital Review. He was the only Iowa-based health leader in Iowa to be honored by Becker’s Hospital Review as “89 chief medical officers to know” in 2022.

In its announcement, Becker’s acknowledged the vital role of chief medical officers and executives stating, “They are the link between physicians and administrators of hospitals and health systems. They bring an important clinical perspective to hospital decision-makers. The executives featured have achieved success with quality and patient safety as well as improving the patient experience.”

Dr. Carreon supports MercyOne’s Mission to transform health care by ensuring everyone receives personalized care and has convenient access throughout the system’s more than 420 care locations.

Dr. Carreon began his career with MercyOne in 2007 as a physician at MercyOne Des Moines Medical Center and served as Chief Medical Officer of MercyOne’s Central Iowa region before being appointed chief medical executive and senior vice president of the health system in May 2021.

As chief medical executive, Dr. Carreon provides leadership to MercyOne quality and safety, health informatics, patient logistics, virtual integrated care and service line development. He serves as a resource for regional chief medical officers and system partner to the president of MercyOne Medical Group. Dr. Carreon also serves as the Chief Operations Officer for MercyOne Central Iowa.

Dr. Carreon is a graduate of Drake University. He completed his Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree at Des Moines University – Osteopathic Medical Center (DMU) with honors for both the National Medical Fellowship Scholar and DMU-Osteopathic Medical Center Minority Scholar program in 2003.

He acquired an Executive Masters of Business Administration at the University of Iowa – Tippie College of Business in 2020.
