Monitors Save Children's Lives and Parents' Time
September 23, 2020
MercyOne Children’s Hospital and pediatric care clinics are committed to ensuring every child is on track for healthy growth and development by providing compassionate care and utilizing innovative, cutting-edge technology.
Funds raised through last year’s MercyOne Des Moines Foundation’s Annual Campaign helped fund a new Intellivue Monitor for MercyOne Des Moines Pediatric Specialty Care and Urgent Care Clinics.
Randi Belling, Practice Manager at MercyOne Des Moines Pediatric Specialty Care and Urgent Care Clinics, explained that when they have a child with some sort of respiratory issue, the Intellivue Monitor allows her and her staff to continuously monitor the child’s trends and vitals to make sure they are stable.
“With children, a big problem is they can decompensate so fast and there is not a lot of time to react,” said Randi. “The Intellivue Monitor alerts us with different tones on how a child is doing, so we know if it is becoming a critical situation.”
With a busy clinic, alert tones on the monitor help Randi and her team stay informed while serving more patients. Before this machine, Randi explained that if they were even a little suspicious, the child would be sent to the emergency room for further monitoring.
“A good percentage of the children we would have sent to the emergency room before we had the Intellivue Monitor are now sent home,” said Randi. “We are saving parents’ money, time, and stress; plus giving them the reassurance that we have taken the time to really monitor their children.”
Randi is truly grateful for the addition of the Intellivue Monitor in her clinic. She expressed that it has not only positively impacted the children they care for but has allowed them to function better as a clinic.
The 2020 Annual Campaign is an opportunity to make an impact in the areas you care most about. Funds raised through the campaign support multiple areas of MercyOne.
“We need to determine where we can make an impact that is going to allow some of this stress to be alleviated,” said Randi. “We are so thankful that people are willing to help reach those needs which impact the community as a whole.”
