In cooperation with Iowa Jobs for America's Graduates (iJAG), MercyOne North Iowa’s new eight-week phlebotomy training program graduated its first class August 1. The ten area students, ages 17-24, will be key to helping fill the workforce gaps in the health care system.  A group photo of MercyOne North Iowa's first phlebotomy training class graduates.

Phlebotomy is a medical procedure that involves drawing blood from a patient.

Students received hands-on training and work experience, enabling them to earn industry credentials and gain real-world experience, leading to potential job placements after completion.

“This program is a powerful example of what’s possible when local health care, education, and workforce development partners come together to invest in our youth,” said Josh Guyer, Chief Development Officer of the MercyOne North Iowa Foundation. “Under the leadership of Shara Kleasath, our lab team has done an outstanding job building this program and creating real-world training and employment opportunities for young adults.”

The program is made possible through partnerships with North Iowa Area Community College (NIACC), iJAG and the Northeast Iowa Workforce Development Board (WIOA). Together, they aim to inspire local businesses to create internship opportunities for high school students, helping them prepare for future careers in healthcare.
