A night of music, a legacy of learning: Cardiology Battle of Bands hits a high note

In a powerful show of community spirit and dedication for the future of rural health care, a unique fundraiser blending music, memory and mission was held at Clear Lake’s Surf Ballroom. The Cardiology Battle of Bands event raised more than $16,000 for the MercyOne North Iowa Graduate Medical Education (GME) program. These funds will directly support medical residents and fellows preparing to serve in rural communities.

The event was spearheaded and emceed by Dr. Michael Spooner, Program Director of MercyOne North Iowa Cardiology Fellowship. With a deep understanding of the physician shortage crisis, especially in underserved rural regions, Dr. Spooner saw an opportunity to support the next generation of physicians who will carry forward the mission of accessible, high-quality care.

"It started with an idea two years ago, when I was speaking with Dr. Brian Olshansky.  He was talking about the revival of his college band, and I was thinking of creative ways to provide more opportunities for our talented North Iowa trainees,” Dr. Spooner reflected. “Attending conferences and exploring the latest clinical technologies are just a couple aspects of the graduate medical education experience that can really enhance medical training in North Iowa and impact long-term physician retention.”

With enthusiastic support from his friends and former colleagues, Dr. Mike Giudici and Dr. Olshansky, the plan came to life. The event featured live performances by their college bands—Lance and the Legionnaires and Terry and the Thunderbirds—and brought together a crowd eager to support medical education.

The funds raised will directly support simulation training, conference attendance and other key learning tools for the MercyOne GME program. In an era where hands-on, high-quality training is more important than ever, this investment ensures MercyOne North Iowa continues to be a leader in preparing compassionate, skilled health care providers.

The event was more than just a night of music—it showed how meaningful things can take shape when people bring their passion to a shared goal. The generosity and vision of those involved reflected a deep commitment to shaping the future of health    care in North Iowa. By investing in the education and training of tomorrow’s health care providers, MercyOne North Iowa Medical Center is not only strengthening its own medical community but also ensuring that patients across the region receive the highest standard of care for years to come.
