Genesis Quad Cities Family Medicine Residency Program

MercyOne Genesis

By graduation, most medical students have sacrificed a great deal.

They consider residency with an interesting combination of optimism and apprehension. On one hand, it is the opportunity to put what they have learned into practice and the promise of a positive cash flow. On the other, there is the stress that is naturally generated from changes in lifestyle, professional and personal relationships and location. We believe the success of your residency will hinge on both the quality of the program you select and the quality of life you're able to lead. The Genesis Quad Cities Family Medicine Residency program offers a high quality of life.

First and foremost, we have a long tradition in the training of family physicians since 1975. This heritage persists today, as we are one of the largest primary care providers in the area. We are located in eastern Iowa on the beautiful Mississippi River, just 2 hours east of Des Moines and 2 1/2 hours west of Chicago.

The Advantages

  • As there are no competing residencies, residents have ample opportunity to learn procedures and benefit from a one-on-one teaching experience with enthusiastic community preceptors.
  • Rural Track, Sports Medicine, International Medical Missions, and more...
  • Daily Clinic from the first day of your residency provides you the exposure and experience you will need in your future practice and promotes patient continuity of care.
  • A friendly learning atmosphere with faculty who love to teach provides the backdrop to prepare you for important career decisions.
  • Midwest values and an affordable cost of living make for a high quality of life for you and your family during residency.
  • Home-call mimics real life responsibilities with residents on pagers rather than being continuously in house.
  • A fully accredited Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) program.

Selecting a residency program that is right for you is one of the most important decisions you will make in your career. Choose Genesis because of our:

Our residency program is unopposed, allowing our residents to work closely with community attendings, perform surgical procedures without competition from other learners, and gain an understanding of the practice of medicine outside of the residency. We have an apprenticeship model of residency training. This is different from most resident training and consists of more 1:1 time with your preceptors. Our faculty teach you with a hand on, interactive teaching style. It emphasizes independence in developing your personal practice style while still providing reassuring backup.

Our residents have daily half-day clinics from Day 1, allowing you to build a practice within the residency by providing continuity of care to your personal patients. As we feel it is important to follow all aspects of patient care, which might be lost on a ward service, residents follow their own obstetrical, nursing home, and hospital patients. In addition, we are also one of the main consultants to many of our community attendings, which further reflects the strong support from the medical community. Our clinic offers a number of services and our residents perform a wide range of office procedures under the supervision of family medicine faculty.

In order to model real-life practice experience, residents use pagers and cell phones to take call from their homes.

Our residents are involved in the business aspects of patient care and they are an integral part of the monthly practice management, which allows residents to learn all aspects of running an office. Our graduates have been very successful in obtaining employment in competitive practices in both private and academic environments.

We aspire to be one of the best programs in the nation, offering innovative and new ideas to continue to expand and improve how we teach residents to become excellent physicians and well-balanced individuals.
