Parenting time

We welcome and encourage parents to be actively involved in their baby’s care while in the NICU. You are welcome at your baby’s bedside at any time, day or night. Your presence and involvement are just as vital to your baby’s well-being as your baby is to you.

The only time you will not be allowed in the unit is if there is a special procedure being done. At this time, we may ask you to step out briefly.

Our NICU team

Our team of dedicated professionals work together to care for premature and ill newborns. Our team includes the following specialists:

  • Neonatologists – Physicians with advanced training in the treatment of premature and critically ill infants.
  • Primary Nurse – The nurse most frequently assigned to care for your baby. This nurse is responsible for creating a personalized care plan and guiding you in learning how to care for your baby.
  • Nurse Manager – A registered nurse who oversees patient care in the NICU, ensuring quality care for both infants and their families.
  • Lactation Consultant – A nurse with expertise in breastfeeding and who supports and advises mothers during their breastfeeding journey.
  • Occupational Therapist – A specialist in infant development, particularly in areas related to feeding, oral skills and motor function.
  • Physical Therapist – A professional focused on evaluating and supporting muscle tone, movement and physical development.
  • Speech and Language Therapist – A specialist who addresses feeding concerns related to sucking, swallowing and other oral motor skills.
  • Social Worker – A resource for help with practical needs such as housing, insurance and transportation, as well as emotional and social support.
  • Respiratory Therapist – A health care provider trained in assisting infants who require oxygen or other respiratory support.

MercyOne Genesis partners with Onsite Neonatal Partners, an organization who partners with community hospitals throughout the country to ensure access to premiere neonatal care in a community setting. This physician-led organization prioritizes safety, effectiveness and the practice of evidence-based medicine in community-based Level II and Level III NICUs in the United States.

Access to innovative treatment

Your infant will benefit from the MercyOne Genesis membership in the Vermont Oxford Network, a collaborative community of more than 1,000 health care centers focused on the treatment of high-risk newborns. Network members share with each other the latest neonatal care research and quality initiatives. As a patient of a member hospital, your child will have access to clinical trials and long-term follow-up studies to help improve his or her health outcomes.
