Lung cancer awareness takes shape with giant inflatable lung at MercyOne Waterloo Medical Center
October 28, 2025To help raise awareness of the importance of lung screenings and prevention strategies for lung cancer, MercyOne Waterloo Medical Center will feature a 6-foot-tall inflatable lung display in the atrium of the Health Plaza lobby on November 3.
Local lung cancer awareness is critical since Black Hawk County has the second-highest rate of lung cancer diagnoses in Iowa. National Lung Cancer Screening Day is November 8.
“In honor of National Lung Screening Day, we’re excited to showcase a large inflatable lung to raise awareness about the importance of early detection,” said Shannon Huey, RN, MercyOne Radiology nurse navigator. “We hope this interactive display motivates visitors, employees, and community members to learn more about lung health. If you or someone you know meets the criteria for a lung screening, our team is ready to help guide you through the process.”
The event will feature complimentary snacks and handouts, along with essential information on lung screenings and the lifesaving power of early detection.
In addition to the inflatable lung display, MercyOne will introduce Dr. Alhassan Badahman and Dr. John Sherret who have joined Dr. David Visokey and the health system’s ongoing battle against lung cancer. This addition to our team underscores our commitment to providing comprehensive care and support for our patients close to home.
