Des Moines, Iowa; April 27, 2026 – Health care providers nationwide are facing significant challenges, including increasing costs, staffing shortages and reimbursement that does not cover the full cost of care. These pressures are combined with recent and expected government funding and policy changes across Medicaid and Medicare, reducing reimbursement to hospital systems. It is not possible to absorb these impacts without making thoughtful, forward-looking adjustments to remain sustainable. 

After thorough analysis, MercyOne South Des Moines Family Medicine and MercyOne South Des Moines Urgent Care will transition their services to other nearby MercyOne Family Medicine practices in the Des Moines metro area. For patients needing urgent care, several options are available in the area, including:

  • MercyOne Pleasant Hill Urgent Care - 5900 E University Ave, Suite 100, Pleasant Hill, Iowa
  • MercyOne Ankeny Urgent Care- 800 E 1st St., Suite 1500, Ankeny, Iowa
  • MercyOne Clive Urgent Care - 1601 NW 114th St., Suite 255, Clive, Iowa 

June 26 is the last day that patients will be seen at MercyOne South Des Moines Family Medicine. 

There are several other MercyOne Family Medicine Practice locations near the MercyOne South Des Moines location, and patients have been offered information regarding these locations and the ability to transfer their medical records. 

“Our patients remain the top priority, and we’ll work to provide a seamless transition as we navigate this process,” said Katie Fredericks, Director of Operations for the MercyOne Medical Group. 

Colleagues and providers have been notified and offered positions at another MercyOne location in the Des Moines area, and their patients will be notified where they are relocating. 

Human Resources is meeting individually with impacted colleagues and will assist in identifying available roles within MercyOne, including available positions at our other MercyOne Family Medicine locations. Supporting colleagues with care, respect and transparency remains central to our Mission.

  • This transition allows us to proactively strengthen our ministry by expanding access where possible and consolidate or relocate services where barriers exist, ensuring sustainability and growth in a swiftly changing health care environment.
  • Patients will be notified and provided with information about other MercyOne Family Medicine options, as well as where their current provider is relocating.
     
  • There are several other MercyOne family medicine clinics near MercyOne South Des Moines that are accessible by public transportation.
     
  • We will transfer patient records to the family medicine practice of their choice and help them make a smooth transition for care.

  • We will not be participating in interviews at this time. Our focus is to continue care for our community and support patients through this transition.
