Mammograms
What is a mammogram?
Mammograms are a screening tool to detect early breast cancer in women experiencing no symptoms, and to detect and diagnose breast disease in women experiencing symptoms such as a lump, pain or nipple discharge.
3D Mammograms
MercyOne's mammography options include breast tomosynthesis – or 3D mammograms – which are proven to detect more incidents of breast cancers, and very often detect them earlier than traditional mammograms. 3D mammograms create multiple images of the breast in multiple very thin layers so doctors can examine tissue one layer at a time instead of viewing a single flat image. Using this method, fine details are more visible and no longer hidden by the tissue above or below. The increased image quality and detail help radiologists see the size, shape and location of any abnormalities better.
Benefits of 3D mammogram
- Earlier detection of breast cancer
- Fewer false positives and unnecessary patient call-backs
- It only takes a few seconds longer than a traditional mammogram
- No additional compression is needed
- Radiation exposure is about the same as a traditional mammogram
- The procedure is covered by many commercial insurance carriers, Medicare, and Medicaid.
The following American Cancer Society guidelines are for women at average risk for breast cancer.
- Women ages 40-44 have the option to begin mammograms every year.
- Women ages 45-54 should get mammograms every year.
- Women 55 and older can have a mammogram every other year or continue with mammograms every year.
