Every patient’s health is unique, and each person responds differently to treatment. At MercyOne Des Moines Wound Care, our expert team includes primary care physicians, podiatrists, certified wound, ostomy and continence nurses, physical and occupational therapists, dietitians, diabetes care professionals and hyperbaric medicine specialists.

Our wound care specialists treat chronic, non-healing wounds that have not responded to traditional treatment, including wounds related to diabetes, pressure injuries, circulatory issues, burns and traumatic injuries. We offer advanced wound care technologies designed to accelerate healing, reduce the risk of infection and help patients avoid hospitalization.

What to expect at your visit

At your first appointment, our team will conduct a comprehensive evaluation of your wound. This may include diagnostic tests to determine the underlying cause and identify any conditions affecting the healing process.

Once your results are reviewed, your wound care specialists will create a personalized treatment plan tailored to your needs. Throughout your care, we will continue to monitor your healing progress and adjust your plan as needed to support the best possible outcome.

Working with your primary care physician

Throughout your treatment, your MercyOne Wound Care team works closely with your primary care physician to ensure seamless, coordinated care. After your first visit, your physician will receive a detailed report outlining your diagnosis and personalized treatment plan. They will continue to receive periodic updates on your progress so they remain fully informed and involved in your ongoing care.

Making an appointment

If you have a slow‑healing or non‑healing wound that needs attention, you can schedule an appointment directly or ask your primary care physician to assist with coordinating a visit to our wound care clinic. If you’re unsure whether your wound requires specialized care, please call our team—we’re happy to help determine whether an appointment is appropriate.

Before your first visit, we recommend reviewing your insurance benefits or contacting your insurance provider to find out whether pre‑certification or a referral is required for treatment.

Patient benefits include:

  • A personalized treatment plan tailored to your specific wound type, medical history and healing needs.
  • Coordinated care between your wound care specialists and your primary care physician to address underlying conditions—such as diabetes—that may affect healing.
  • Access to advanced wound care technologies, including bio‑engineered tissue products and vacuum‑assisted closure therapies.
  • Coverage through Medicare for most services, helping reduce out‑of‑pocket expenses for eligible patients.
