Our expert team of physicians, nurses, surgeons and lactation consultants provide compassionate, personalized care for your maternal health care needs.

MercyOne Dubuque Birth Center has 24/7 coverage by Neonatal Pediatric Nurse Practitioners. These neonatal specialists are available to every baby in our birth center, including our high-functioning Level II Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). The birth center is also recognized with a Birthing-Friendly designation from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), acknowledging our dedication to providing high-quality maternity care.

Our expert care team is prepared to assist with conditions that may arise with pregnancy. These can include breastfeeding challenges, gestational diabetes, miscarriage, postpartum depression, preterm labor, preeclampsia and stillbirth.

Lactation support

Our lactation support team offers personalized breastfeeding care from certified lactation consultants, helping families with common challenges and informed feeding choices. Services include one-on-one support, support groups, access to breast pumps and supplies, and a milk dispensary for families who need donor milk.

Practices and interventions:

• Baby’s first health exam with our Neonatal Pediatric Nurse Practitioners
• Demonstrate and assist with baby’s first bath
• Epidural and nitrous oxide for pain control during labor
• External cephalic version (to turn baby from breech to head down)
• Labor induction
• Neonatal resuscitation
• Operating suite within the birth center should an emergent c-section need to occur

• Skin-to-skin bonding

Milk Depot and Dispensary

MercyOne Dubuque Birth Center is an approved milk depot and milk dispensary through Mother’s Milk Bank of Iowa.

Certified donors provide frozen milk to our depot, which is then collected and processed by the milk bank. Donor milk is an option for any baby during their stay at our birth center and is included at no extra cost.

Our birth center also offers pasteurized donor human milk for purchase to any parent or guardian in need of it for their infant. A doctor’s prescription is required, and each bottle costs $15. Please call the birth center at 563-589-8599 for drop off and pick up times.
