cancerMercyOne Des Moines Foundation was recently awarded a $15,000 grant from the Iowa Cancer Consortium to support the implementation and distribution of virtual recordings of the MercyOne Cancer Education Series.

The Cancer Education Series began in 2009 and is a collaborative effort between MercyOne Des Moines Cancer Center and Above + Beyond Cancer. This free weekly series is hosted by Dr. Richard Deming, Medical Director of MercyOne Des Moines Cancer Center, and provides health-related topics specifically for cancer patients, survivors and their families to address issues and their impact on various aspects of everyday living with cancer.

Funding through the Iowa Cancer Consortium grant will assist in allowing sessions to further distributed and made available, free of charge, to all cancer centers across the state of Iowa as well as provide access for individuals who desire information, with a focus on vulnerable populations.

Until March of 2020, sessions were held in person at the MercyOne Health & Fitness Center in Clive, limiting access to those who reside in central Iowa. Due to the novel coronavirus, in-person sessions are temporarily suspended, and sessions are now being recorded and broadcast virtually.

“We are grateful that this grant will allow us to expand the reach of the Cancer Education Series,” said Joan Bindel, Senior Director of Development at MercyOne Des Moines Foundation. “The information provided in each session is filled with valuable information for cancer patients, survivors and families around the state of Iowa.”
