What is breast augmentation?
Breast augmentation involves using implants filled with saline or cohesive silicone gel to increase breast size. Some patients may also choose to transfer fat from one part of the body to the breast area for augmentation. Many people have breast augmentation for different reasons, including after weight loss or breast feeding that can result in significant lost volume.

Before surgery: A thorough consultation to review your goals, health history and surgical plan.
During surgery: MercyOne board-certified plastic surgeons typically perform breast augmentation under general anesthesia. Your surgeon will make incisions in discreet areas so the implants can be placed with minimal visible scarring. In most cases, the incision is made in the natural crease underneath the breast, near the inframammary fold.
Depending on your goals, implants may be positioned either above the muscle (subfascial) or partially beneath the muscle (dual plane). Your surgeon will guide you through these options during your consultation and explain the benefits of each approach.
After the implants are placed, the incisions are carefully closed.
Recovery: Your surgeon will see you for a follow‑up visit one to two days after surgery to ensure you’re healing well. Most patients take three to seven days away from work to rest and recover after surgery. Light activity is usually safe to resume soon after, but your surgeon will provide clear guidance on activity restrictions (including lifting) for the first three to four weeks following surgery.
You may shower after your procedure, but it’s important to avoid soaking in a bathtub, pool, lake or the ocean until your surgeon lets you know it’s safe.
To support a smooth and comfortable recovery, you will receive detailed care instructions at both your pre‑operative and post‑operative appointments.
