Gary’s Ride was created in loving memory of Gary Wiedenfeld, a devoted stepfather, passionate cyclist, and courageous warrior who battled glioblastoma with unwavering strength. Gary’s Ride has become a beacon of hope for brain cancer patients across Iowa. Founded by Kristin Wiedenfeld, Gary’s Ride is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit charity that honors Gary’s legacy by raising funds and awareness for those affected by glioblastoma—the most aggressive and common malignant brain tumor in adults.
Gary’s story is one of resilience. Despite facing multiple surgeries, a near-fatal accident, and ultimately a diagnosis of glioblastoma multiforme grade IV in April 2020, Gary remained a symbol of courage, kindness, and perseverance until his passing in May 2021. His spirit lives on through the mission of Gary’s Ride: to support local patients and families impacted by brain cancer and to help beat the disease.
Making a Difference Through MercyOne
Thanks to the generosity of its supporters, Gary’s Ride has made a profound impact on MercyOne Des Moines Foundation and MercyOne Richard Deming Cancer Center. To date, the organization has contributed over $83,000, helping 245 primary brain cancer patients and 40 glioblastoma patients access financial assistance and integrative medicine services. These funds ease the burdens of treatment and provide critical support for patients navigating one of life’s most difficult journeys.
Gary’s Ride also supports the Iowa Oncology Research Association, furthering research and innovation in brain cancer care. By partnering with MercyOne, the organization ensures that local patients receive compassionate, cutting-edge treatment close to home.
“We are deeply grateful to Gary’s Ride for their generous support of the MercyOne Richard Deming Cancer Center. Their commitment allows us to offer a wide range of integrative medicine therapies—such as acupuncture, massage, chiropractic care, reflexology, reiki, art and music therapy—that ease the burden of cancer treatment and promote healing of the mind, body, and spirit. In addition, their support helps provide financial assistance to patients, ensuring compassionate care is accessible to all who need it.” Said Joan Bindel, Vice President of Philanthropy at MercyOne Des Moines Foundation. “Every mile ridden helps our patients heal with dignity, hope, and the support they deserve.”
Each year, Gary’s Ride hosts an annual brain cancer bike ride on the third Saturday in May, bringing together cyclists, families, and community members to raise funds and celebrate hope. The next ride will take place on Saturday, May 16, 2026, along the Raccoon River Trail, starting at the Waukee trailhead. Participants can enjoy a scenic ride, great food, and a vibrant post-ride celebration—all while supporting a meaningful cause.
A Legacy of Love and Action
