Ringing in Hope: Honoring Survivorship at MercyOne Richard Deming Cancer Center

MercyOne Richard Deming Cancer Center recently welcomed three new cancer bells—symbols of hope, strength and perseverance for those completing cancer treatment. For survivors, ringing the bell marks an important milestone: the transition from active treatment to the next chapter of life. For families, caregivers, and care teams, it is a moment of celebration, relief, and shared pride. The first bell is located in the Radiation Oncology department, and the second one is at MercyOne Clive Radiation Oncology department. The third bell is in the process of being hung up in the infusion space at MercyOne Richard Deming Cancer Center.
More than a sound, the cancer bell represents a rite of passage. As patients begin treatment, they enter a challenging season marked by uncertainty and resilience. When treatment is complete, ringing the bell signals a change in status—from patient to survivor. This shared ritual unites survivors and their caregivers in celebration while offering encouragement and hope to others who are still in treatment. For many, it also provides a meaningful opportunity for emotional release, acknowledging both the difficulty of the journey and the strength it took to reach this moment.
“At the end of treatment, ringing the bell gives patients a moment to pause, reflect, and be recognized,” said Trey Wiegand, Regional Director Oncology at MercyOne Richard Deming Cancer Center. “The bell is more than a tradition—it’s a celebration of courage, a release of emotion, and a reminder that no one makes this journey alone. Each ring carries hope for survivors, their families, and for those still walking the path.”

Celebrate Today
Today as I ring this bell,
it signals the close of one chapter
and the start of another.
I ring once for all I have endured.
I ring twice to celebrate today.
And I ring once more for the future!
