Rod Schlader and Sue Rebedeau

At a time when hospitals across the country are facing significant financial challenges, the MercyOne North Iowa Foundation is expressing deep gratitude to the individuals and organizations whose generosity continues to uphold local access to health care for all—regardless of ability to pay.

Few understand the importance of this mission better than Rod Schlader and Sue Rebedeau, whose long-standing service to the community and loyal philanthropy have left a deep-rooted impact. Rod, the former CEO of MercyOne North Iowa Medical Center, has served on numerous community boards throughout his career. Sue, a retired social worker and dedicated local volunteer, was previously honored with the Main Street Iowa Leadership Award for her leadership in revitalizing downtown Mason City.

Together, the couple exemplifies what it means to live a life of service. As members of the MercyOne North Iowa Foundation Lifetime Giving Circle, Rod and Sue have contributed generously to ensuring the hospital’s ability to provide top-tier health care to the region. Their perspective is shaped not only by their professional experience but also by their personal journey of raising a family in North Iowa and witnessing firsthand the value of excellent local care.

“We believe that health care services should be delivered locally, they share. “This takes resources that are above and beyond what the health care system can produce on its own given the low reimbursement rates and ever-changing technology.” Josh Guyer, Chief Development Officer, emphasizes the continued importance of such donor support, saying, “Now, more than ever, donors like Rod and Sue help us keep our promise,” reaffirming the Foundation's commitment to the charitable mission that has guided its work for years. Despite increasing demands, MercyOne North Iowa remains committed to its identity as a charitable hospital, anchored in the belief that essential health services should be available to every North Iowan.

Rod and Sue’s generous support is a reflection of the same spirit of reverence and compassion. “Thank you to the Sisters of Mercy, the donors, and to the dedicated providers and employees of MercyOne North Iowa,” they said. “You truly make our world a better place!”

In celebrating Rod and Sue, the MercyOne North Iowa Foundation also recognizes the broader community of donors who make it possible to pursue clinical excellence, invest in medical education, and care for those experiencing poverty across North Iowa and beyond.
