MercyOne Clinton Medical Center will celebrate its new da Vinci surgical robot with a ribbon cutting on Wednesday, June 17, at 10 a.m.

The event will take place in the hospital lobby, and the da Vinci Xi Surgical System will be on display.

The first robotic-assisted surgery at MercyOne Clinton Medical Center took place in early May and was performed by surgeon Dr. Nathan Fierce. This moment marks more than new technology — it represents MercyOne’s continued commitment to bringing advanced, high-quality care closer to home for the patients and families we serve.

With robotic-assisted surgery, providers can perform procedures with enhanced precision, which may lead to smaller incisions, less pain and faster recovery times for patients. Our surgical team in Clinton is currently using the da Vinci Xi for general surgery cases and plans to expand to the urology and gynecological service lines.

Patient story

In March, Jami Lange, of Clinton, was experiencing severe abdominal pain. An MRI discovered that the cause of her discomfort was a large gallstone in the gallbladder.

“During my surgical consultation with Dr. Fierce in mid-April, he informed me that due to my large gallstone and some of my symptoms, it was best to remove my gallbladder surgically,” said Lange.

Dr. Fierce presented her with two options. The first option was a traditional laparoscopic procedure. The second was a robotic-assisted laparoscopic procedure.

“He explained that the robotic surgery offers better visualization of organs during surgery, and the instruments don't go in as far, so there is less of a chance of a perforation. The incisions are smaller, and the procedure can lower the risk of complications, making the robotic case a safer option,” she added.

Dr. Fierce was able to visualize Lange’s common bile duct by using a dye that was injected into her IV prior to going to surgery. Fluorescence imaging was then used to visualize the common bile duct.

Faster recovery

“I've had minimal pain post-surgery that has been controlled with just Tylenol. I've experienced no nausea and have been able to eat whatever I want,” said Lange. She has been taking it easy during her recovery but staying active with frequent walks.

“My experience at MercyOne Clinton was excellent, and I was able to go home that same day,” said Lange.

In addition to Dr. Fierce, Lange had high praise for the entire team, including the nurses, the operating room team, recovery and anesthesia.

“The surgery itself was quick, and the staff made sure that my pain was controlled afterward. I had no pain before I left the hospital. The whole experience was wonderful, and I am thankful I was able to stay right here in Clinton to have my surgery with Dr. Fierce using the latest technology,” Lange said.
