Expert Care for Heart Arrhythmias

At MercyOne, our heart rhythm specialists diagnose and treat arrhythmias—abnormal heartbeats that can affect your heart’s ability to pump blood efficiently. Using the latest technologies and personalized care plants, we offer advanced, minimally invasive treatments to restore and maintain a normal heartbeat. Our dedicated electrophysiology teams provide comprehensive services to help patients achieve optimal heart health.

Conditions We Treat

We manage a wide range of arrhythmias, including:

  • Atrial fibrillation (AFib)
  • Atrial flutter
  • Supraventricular tachycardia (SVT)
  • Ventricular tachycardia (VT)
  • Bradycardia (slow heart rate)
  • Heart block

Treatment Options

Medical Management and Follow-Up

We provide comprehensive medical management for arrhythmias, utilizing the most current medications and treatment protocols to control heart rhythm and rate

Cardioversion

Cardioversion is a procedure used to restore a normal heart rhythm in people with certain types of arrhythmias, such as atrial fibrillation or atrial flutter. At MercyOne, we offer both electrical and pharmacologic cardioversion options based on your condition and overall health.

Catheter Ablation

Catheter ablation is a minimally invasive procedure used to treat abnormal heart rhythms by targeting and eliminating the source of irregular electrical signals in the heart. Our expert electrophysiologists use several advanced techniques, tailored to the type and location of the arrhythmia:

  • Pulse Field Ablation (PFA):
An innovative, non-thermal technique for treating certain types of heart rhythm disorders, especially paroxysmal or persistent atrial fibrillation. Unlike traditional ablation methods that use heat (radiofrequency) or cold (cryoablation), PFA uses ultrashort electrical pulses to selectively target and disable abnormal heart tissue while minimizing damage to surrounding tissues. This cutting-edge technique offers shorter procedure times and faster recovery times for many patients, reduced risks of complications such as collateral tissue damage.
  • Radiofrequency Ablation (RFA):
Previously the most widely used technique, RFA delivers controlled heat through a catheter to destroy small areas of heart tissue causing the abnormal rhythm.
  • Cryoablation:
This technique uses extreme cold to freeze and disable the problematic heart tissue. It is especially effective for treating atrial fibrillation and is offered at select MercyOne centers.

PFA is one of the newest advancements in electrophysiology and is currently available at select MercyOne locations as part of our commitment to offering the most advanced and effective arrhythmia treatments available.

Pacemaker and Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator (ICD) Implantation

Our electrophysiologists have extensive experience implanting pacemakers and ICDs, offering a full range of the latest devices tailored to individual patient needs.

Biventricular Pacemakers

For patients with heart failure, biventricular pacemakers can improve left ventricular function and complement existing pacemaker or ICD therapy.

Left Atrial Appendage Closure Devices

To reduce stroke risk in patients with atrial fibrillation, we offer procedures like the WATCHMAN™ implant and the LARIAT™ procedure to close off the left atrial appendage.

Device Clinics

MercyOne’s specialized device clinics are dedicated to the care and monitoring of patients with implanted cardiac devices, including pacemakers, implantable cardioverter defibrillators (ICDs) and insertable cardiac monitors (loop recorders. Services Include:

  • Routine in-person and remote monitoring to detect any device or rhythm issues early
  • Device programming and adjustments for optimal performance
  • Battery and lead checks to anticipate and prevent failures
  • Education and support for patients and families on living with a cardiac device

Our Device Clinics are staffed by highly trained nurses, electrophysiologists, and technicians who work closely with your care team to provide timely updates and personalized follow-up care.

Remote Monitoring

MercyOne utilizes sophisticated remote patient monitoring devices to help manage heart rhythm conditions (arrhythmias) and heart failure indicators from the comfort of home. This technology allows our care team to track your heart’s activity continuously and respond quickly to any changes. The data your device collects is sent securely to our device clinic team who reviews your readings and contact you if any action is needed. Remote monitoring is available for most implanted cardiac devices, including pacemakers, ICDs, CRT devices, and loop recorders.
