Left Atrial Appendage Closure WATCHMAN™ device
Minimally Invasive Procedure to Reduce AFib Stroke Risk
If you have atrial fibrillation (AFib) – not caused by heart valve disease, you may be at increased risk for stroke. The WATCHMAN™ device offers a safe, effective alternative to long-term blood thinners.
What is WATCHMAN?
WATCHMAN is a small, permanent device that seals off the left atrial appendage (LAA)—the area where most stroke-causing clots form in AFib patients.
Why Choose WATCHMAN?
- Reduces stroke risk in AFib patients
- Eliminates need for lifelong blood thinners for most patients
- Minimally invasive—implanted via a small incision in the leg
- Quick recovery—typically one overnight hospital stay
MercyOne’s Expertise
MercyOne is the leader in WATCHMAN procedures implanting more of these devices than anyone else in the state. MercyOne Iowa Heart Center was the first in Iowa to implant WATCHMAN during the 2012 Prevail trial. We participate and are at the forefront of clinical research to give patients access to the Watchman device who might not meet the currently approved criteria for Watchman.
How WATCHMAN Works
AFib increases stroke risk by causing blood to pool and clot in the LAA. WATCHMAN closes off this area, preventing clots from entering the bloodstream and causing a stroke.
In clinical trials:
- 92% of patients stopped warfarin within 45 days
- 99% stopped warfarin within one year
- Watch how WATCHMAN works
The Procedure
- Performed under general anesthesia
- Takes about one hour
- Inserted through a small incision in the upper leg
- Most patients go home the next day
After the Procedure
- Take warfarin for 45 days, then transition to clopidogrel (Plavix®) and aspirin for 6 months
- Long-term: aspirin only for most patients
- Your doctor will monitor healing and guide medication changes
