Stroke Recovery and Rehabilitation
At MercyOne, we know a stroke can change your life in an instant. Our dedicated stroke care team supports your recovery with personalized, expert care to help you regain independence and get back to doing what you love.
Emergency and hospital care
After your stroke, you’ll receive immediate care to stabilize your condition and prevent further complications. MercyOne’s stroke specialists monitor your brain function, vital signs and overall health while preparing you for the next steps in recovery.
Early rehabilitation
Once your condition is stable, stroke rehabilitation begins. MercyOne’s team of experts works together with you to create a personalized recovery plan. We help restore movement, communication and daily living skills, while supporting your emotional well-being.
Your stroke recovery team
At MercyOne, stroke rehabilitation is directed by a team of various specialists, each focused on helping you heal, regain independence and live life fully.
- Neurologist - Oversees your brain health and stroke recovery, especially during your hospital stay. They help diagnose your stroke and monitor your progress.
 - Physiatrist - Specializes in physical medicine and rehabilitation and often leads your rehab plan after your initial hospital treatment. This ensures you receive coordinated care to meet your goals.
 - Primary care provider - Supports your long-term health, helps manage other conditions and works with you to prevent future strokes.
 - Rehabilitation nurse - Provides daily support and education to you and your family and helps manage medications and health conditions such as blood pressure or diabetes.
 - Case manager or social worker - Helps organize your care plan, coordinates your transition of care and connects you with MercyOne resources like outpatient therapy, home care or community support.

Your MercyOne care team may also include:
- Physical therapist - Helps you regain strength, balance and movement so you can return to daily activities
 - Occupational therapist - Supports you in relearning everyday tasks like dressing, bathing and cooking
 - Speech therapist - Assists with speaking, understanding language and safe swallowing
 - Neuropsychologist or psychologist - Helps you manage emotional changes and supports your brain’s recovery
