Philanthropy Brings Advanced Breast Cancer Technology to North Iowa

At MercyOne North Iowa, we believe every patient deserves care that’s not only effective, but also compassionate, comfortable and cutting-edge. Thanks to donor support, we’re delivering on this promise with an innovative wire-free localization system that’s transforming the surgical experience for women facing breast cancer in our region.
Previously, patients had to undergo a wire placement procedure on the same day as their surgery—a process that could be logistically challenging and emotionally taxing. Now with wire-free localization, our breast radiologists can place a tiny marker—about the size of a grain of rice—days or even weeks in advance. This flexibility allows patients to plan their care with less disruption to their daily lives and gives surgical teams more availability with surgery days.
“This technology is a game-changer for our patients. By eliminating the need for same-day wire placement, we’re reducing stress and giving women more control over their care. It’s a more compassionate approach during a time that’s already emotionally difficult,” says Mindy Mutschler, Imaging Services Director.
This advanced, minimally invasive system offers greater comfort, improved imaging compatibility and more precise surgical guidance. For our patients, it means less anxiety and a smoother experience during an already difficult time. For our clinicians, it enhances workflow and helps ensure the highest level of care.
Breast cancer remains one of the most diagnosed cancers in our community. With your support, we’re doing more than keeping up with modern medicine -- we’re setting a new standard of care for North Iowa.
Thank you for helping us offer hope, healing and greater peace of mind to patients who need it most.
