Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PM&R), also known as physiatry, helps you recover from injury, illness or other conditions that affect how you move, function and live your life each day.

PM&R can help you:

  • Regain strength and movement after an injury or accident.
  • Recover from surgery, brain injury or stroke.
  • Address conditions like arthritis, multiple sclerosis or cerebral palsy.
  • Manage pain without surgery developing treatment plans that may include physical therapy, medications, or injections. Improve independence and return to school, work or everyday activities.

A physiatrist is a doctor specializing in physical medicine and rehabilitation. They work with a health care team to develop a personalized treatment plan for you. The team includes:

  • Physical therapists to help with movement and strength.
  • Occupational therapists to help with daily tasks like dressing or cooking.
  • Speech therapists to help with speaking, swallowing and thinking skills.
