What to expect when you start cancer care
Many oncology visits begin with a referral from your primary care provider and a review of your existing medical records. Your oncologist may request imaging, pathology, laboratory results, medication lists and notes from past providers. Requirements vary, so ask your care location which documents to send and how to send them securely. You can access your MercyOne patient records through MyChart and they can be easily shared with your care team.
Your MercyOne oncologist may review your health history and records, perform an exam and ask about your symptoms, discuss healthcare priorities and answer questions you might have. Bring an updated medication list and consider bringing a support person to your first appointment. Additional testing may be needed before finalizing your diagnosis and care plan.
Your MercyOne care team will explain your cancer treatment options based on your diagnosis. It’s important to ask about each option, possible benefits and risks, side effects, alternatives, timing and how treatment may affect your daily life. A second opinion may also be part of your decision-making process.
As your treatment moves forward, your care team will coordinate treatment visits, symptom support, follow-up testing and services such as nutrition, support groups or rehabilitation. Most MercyOne oncology locations have nurse navigators to help guide you through the complexities of cancer treatment. Talk with your care team when you have questions, side effects, transportation concerns or other barriers to care.
